“Remembering Our Past”

A History of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church:

The earliest records of our church are dated August 24, 1907.  The records were in the home of Toy Pittman.  Toy’s father, Rob Pittman, was one of the founders of the church.

On September 21, 1907, the church met, and after the sermon by W.A. Thompson, the church went into conference and elected W.A. Thompson as the first pastor of Mtn. Pleasant Baptist Church.  Also, the church appointed a committee for the purpose of building a new church.  The committee was made up of the following members: R.B. Pitman, Jasper Hughs, and W.T.S Robertson.

During conference October 26, 1907, the church elected their first clerk, W.T.S Robertson.  Also at this meeting a set of rules were drawn up and adopted by the church.

Church Rules:

1)      Any member wishing to speak anything shall rise and address the moderator.

2)      The word Brother shall be used in all business transactions.

3)      If any member shall use profane language or engage in boystous conduct he shall be dealt with.

4)      If any member shall engage in making, selling, or using whiskey as a beverage he shall be dealt with.

5)      If any member shall go to or have frolics in their home they shall be dealt with.

6)      The church clerk shall read the church rules every six months.

Anyone accused of an infringement was investigated by a committee.  If found guilty the person had to ask the church for forgiveness.  If they failed to do so, the church withdrew fellowship until proper steps were taken.

In December 1907, two more members were elected to the building committee.  The church elected their first deacons.  Thomas Pruitt, Bud Burrell and Willie Pruitt.  The records of the first move are vague, but it seems the church obtained a house and moved in after some remodeling.  The report states that $34.70 was spent.  The church only had $21.25 in the treasury, which left us in debt for the first time.  On Sunday, May 21, 1910,  A.T. James delivered the sermon and dedicated the house to the Lord.

W.P. Stepp was elected as the second pastor in 1910.  In July, 1911, the church was enrolled as a member of the North Greenville Association.  The church purchased its first organ and elected their first organist, Ether Morgan in August, 1912.  The first reference to the pastor’s salary was in 1914, in which a collection of $10.00 was given to Rev. W.P. Stepp as his salary for the past year.  On another occasion the collection was $3.30.

In October, 1914, the church purchased one acre and 2/7th of land for the sum of $12.00.  Willie Pruitt, George Burrell, and G.A. Pittman were on the committee that purchased and had the land surveyed.  This was the beginning of the Mtn. Pleasant that we now attend to the best of our understanding.
